They had a talk from Mrs Phelps who told them all about the soldiers from the area and showed them some artefacts.

This year our arts week centred around the 100th anniversary of The Battle of the Somme. Children made poppies in different formats and drew soldier portraits. Kestrels class also made charcoal drawings of ‘no man’s land’ and write poems and letters home. During the week, a local artist, Rachel Shilston, also worked with children to make mosaic tiles to go around our poppy in the Remembrace Garden. The inspiration for some of the art work also came from our new WWI themed bench – wheere there are soldier sillouettes.

Hope Brook will be celebrating Advent slightly differently this year and will be exploring the meaning of the Advent wreath. The use of the Advent wreath with four candles has been an Advent ritual for hundreds of years and is a symbol of the 4 week wait for Jesus‟ birth.
The green branches remind us of the new life we have in Jesus, the circle represents the eternity of God‟s love for us – with no beginning and no end.

The Candles:

  • The first purple candle is the “Candle of Hope.” It symbolizes faith in God keeping his promises to humanity and reminds us to be patient for his arrival. This is lit each day during the first week of Advent.
  • The second purple candle is the “Candle of Preparation,” reminding Christians to “get ready” to receive God. The two purple candles are lit during the second week of Advent.
  • The pink candle is the “Candle of Joy.” It recalls the angels joyfully singing about the birth of Christ. The pink and two purple candles are lit during the third week of Advent.
  • The third purple candle is the “Candle of Love” reminds Christians that God loves them enough to send his only Son to Earth because he loves us. The three purple candles and the pink candle are lit during the fourth week of Advent.
  • The white candle is the “Christ Candle,” and is in the centre of the wreath. It reminds us that Jesus is the spotless lamb of God sent to bring us Forgiveness, Hope and Joy. This candle is lit on Christmas day on its own.

Advent Assembly – Woodpeckers Class – 7th December 2015

The next advent assembly was from Woodpeckers Class. This assembly focussed on the birth of Jesus and the fact that he was homeless when he was born. The children re-told the nativity story and acted some sections out too. The wreath was decorated to show the struggles people all over the world face, including homelessness and famine. In the assembly, children were invited (if they wished to), to write a prayer on a slip of yellow paper and this became the ‘straw’ in the manger where Jesus lay.

IMG_4014 IMG_4015 IMG_4016 IMG_4017 IMG_4018 IMG_4019 IMG_4020 IMG_4021 IMG_4022 IMG_4025 IMG_4028

Advent Assembly – Kestrels Class – 30th November 2015

Advent recounts and remembers the events prior to Jesus’ birth. Advent follows the longings of the Isralites, with scriptures full of promises, prophecies and predictions of a Saviour whom God will send.

We started our set of Advent assemblies with Kestrels Class, who gave us a history of Advent and showed us a wreath which the children walked through. One side was decorated for Christmas, and the other side has children’s worries/jobs relating to the Christmas season on. The children were asked to walk through the wreath and think about the jobs to do with Advent, but also the fun ahead too.

Y4s go to Dene Magna for a CSI Afternoon

The Year 4s from Hope Brook were invited to Dene Magna on 9th July to help solve a crime.

Apparently someone had stolen the Head Teacher’s diamond cufflinks from his house, but luckily forensic evidence had been collected. There was a list of six suspects and our Year 4s had to work out which one must be the criminal by using scientific techniques and a process of elimination.

The following extracts are from notes written by our detectives:

Olivia: “First we looked at the ‘scene of the crime’ and judged [the evidence] against the suspects.”

Finlay: “Every time we finished an activity we ruled out one of the suspects.”

Magda: “We did finger printing and after that we did some more tests. When we finished we found the person that had five ticks was the person who wrote “I will get you.”

Finlay: “we found out Lewis Lock did it because we did finger-printing, metal testing, fibre testing, chromatography and a diabetic blood test.”

Ben: Lewis Lock was found guilty because we tested his fingerprints and it showed it had the same pattern as the one in the crime scene. His fibre was the same as the one in the crime scene. Also we poured his blood in the blue liquid and poured the crime scene blood in too and they had the same colour. We found a letter … and saw the colour of the writing was the same colour writing he used.”

Everyone was impressed at the range of different tests that could be used to catch a criminal, and all enjoyed doing their bit to help!

Arts Week 2015 – Theme of Trees (both a local study and the Kestrels class also looked at Rainforests)

This year our theme for Arts Week was ‘Trees’. We produced some beautiful artwork and now have our very own forest in the corridor! The children also spent some time writing poems, including what the trees might have seen in their time in the Forest of Dean. We even used some sound buttons – when you walk down the corridor of the school you can hear the ‘trees talking’.

Kestrels Class Visit Beechenhurst in Arts Week

Kestrels class went on an outdoor trip (braving the elements) to Beechenhurst in our Arts Week. The theme this year was trees (linked to trees on May Hill which is close to the school). Ketrels went on to use natural resources to make dens and sketch the trees and leave that they saw.
