The work the school produced during Arts Week went on display in All Saints Church, Longhope on Friday 1st July, to commemorate the beginning of the Battle of the Somme. On the following Monday, Kestrels class went to the church to look at the artwork, along with other items which were placed there. They had a talk from Mrs Phelps who told them all about the soldiers from the area and showed them some artefacts.

This year our arts week centred around the 100th anniversary of The Battle of the Somme. Children made poppies in different formats and drew soldier portraits. Kestrels class also made charcoal drawings of ‘no man’s land’ and wrote poems and letters home. During the week, a local artist, Rachel Shilston, also worked with children to make mosaic tiles to go around our poppy in the Remembrance Garden. The inspiration for some of the art work also came from our new WWI themed bench – where there are soldier silhouettes.

Hope Brook celebrated Advent slightly differently this year, exploring the meaning of the Advent wreath. The use of the Advent wreath with four candles is a symbol of the 4 week wait for Jesus birth.
The green branches remind us of the new life we have in Jesus, and the circle represents the eternity of God‟s love for us – with no beginning and no end.

The Candles:

  • The first purple candle is the “Candle of Hope.” It symbolizes faith in God keeping his promises to humanity and reminds us to be patient for his arrival. This is lit each day during the first week of Advent.
  • The second purple candle is the “Candle of Preparation,” reminding Christians to “get ready” to receive God. The two purple candles are lit during the second week of Advent.
  • The pink candle is the “Candle of Joy.” It recalls the angels joyfully singing about the birth of Christ. The pink and two purple candles are lit during the third week of Advent.
  • The third purple candle is the “Candle of Love” reminds Christians that God loves them enough to send his only Son to Earth because he loves us. The three purple candles and the pink candle are lit during the fourth week of Advent.
  • The white candle is the “Christ Candle,” and is in the centre of the wreath. It reminds us that Jesus is the spotless lamb of God sent to bring us Forgiveness, Hope and Joy. This candle is lit on Christmas day on its own.

Advent Assembly – Woodpeckers Class – 7th December 2015

The next advent assembly was from Woodpeckers Class. This assembly focussed on the birth of Jesus and the fact that he was homeless when he was born. The children re-told the nativity story and acted some sections out too. The wreath was decorated to show the struggles people all over the world face, including homelessness and famine. In the assembly, children were invited (if they wished to), to write a prayer on a slip of yellow paper and this became the ‘straw’ in the manger where Jesus lay.

Advent Assembly – Kestrels Class – 30th November 2015

Advent recounts and remembers the events prior to Jesus’ birth. Advent follows the longings of the Israelites, with scriptures full of promises, prophecies and predictions of a Saviour whom God will send.

We started our set of Advent assemblies with Kestrels Class, who gave us a history of Advent and showed us a wreath which the children walked through. One side was decorated for Christmas, and the other side recorded children’s worries relating to the Christmas season on. The children were asked to walk through the wreath and think about the jobs to do with Advent, but also the fun ahead too.

Christmas Craft Afternoon 2015

The children spent the afternoon of 27th November in different classes. We made decorations for the school and listened to Christmas music. It’s a great opportunity for the younger children to work with the older ones.

Remembrance Service 2015

Our Remembrance Service took place on Wednesday 11th November, in the School Hall. We were joined by lots of parents and families as well as lots of members of the British Legion. Our theme this year was ‘Heroes’, in particular the local heroes of Longhope. We planted wishes in our new Remembrance Garden outside the school and placed poppies on the Memorial Stone.

Arts Week 2015 – Theme of Trees (both a local study and the Kestrels class also looked at Rainforests)

This year our theme for Arts Week was ‘Trees’. We produced some beautiful artwork and now have our very own forest in the corridor! The children also spent some time writing poems, including what the trees might have seen in their time in the Forest of Dean. We used sound buttons – when you walk down the corridor of the school you can hear the ‘trees talking’.

Kestrels Class Visit Beechenhurst in Arts Week

Kestrels class went on an outdoor trip (braving the elements) to Beechenhurst in our Arts Week. The theme this year was trees (linked to trees on May Hill which is close to the school). Kestrels went on to use natural resources to make dens and sketch the trees and leaves that they saw.

Wagtails Class Brass Concert

After learning the cornet or baritone for 10 weeks (thanks to Gloucestershire Music) Wagtails class performed a concert to their parents and some of the other children from Hope Brook. Many children played solos and it was great to showcase some more experienced brass players: Elliott King, Rhona Barcoe and George Jervis. Thank-you to all the parents who came to watch the concert and support their children.

Remembrance Service and Remembrance Garden

Following our successful 1940s Tea Party before half term, we raised over £170 towards our Remembrance Garden. Our Remembrance Service, held at school on 11th November was very well attended and the children in Kestrels class led the service, all about ‘One Boy’s War’ with incredible passion and reflection. The children wrote their own thoughts about WWI and planted these on poppies in the Remembrance Garden.
