- PE will be on Tuesdays, please bring in your PE bag ready to leave in school.
- Outdoor learning will be on Wednesdays, please bring in your outdoor learning clothes, wellies or suitable boots in a labelled bag to leave in school.

On the longest day of the year we joined Woodpeckers class to look for signs of Summer. It was a beautiful afternoon and we spotted lots of moon daisies, buttercups, daisies and cow parsley in full bloom on the recreation ground. the children used a view finder to select an area before sketching what they could see. Returning to school we continued our observational drawings by sketching the same tree we drew in Winter and Spring. The children noticed how green the leaves were now and how the trees canopy was much thicker providing great shade! (Su2 Wk3)
This week during Outdoor Learning we went pond dipping in our school pond. The water was full of surprises! We even found some dragonfly lave, the children were very interested to learn that the lave can stay underwater for up to five years. After this time it crawls up a plant, hatching out to dry its legs and wings. Take a look at our photos to see what we found. (Summer 2 Wk 2)
This week has been arts week in school. Our class has been busy making different creatures out of recycled materials, sketching and writing riddles. You are welcome to come into school at the end of the day to look at the children's creations (Wk 6)
One of our parents kindly brought these two beautiful moths (Hawk moth and Plume moth) in for us to look at and release in our nature garden. I have to say I have never seen such a well camouflaged moth as the Plume moth! (week 6)
Well what an exciting week we have had! Our butterflies emerged from their chrysalis's over the weekend and we had two beautiful painted red lady butterflies in our net on Monday morning. Luckily the weather was perfect when we released them in our nature garden and some of the children had the opportunity to hold them, one butterfly was very reluctant to leave a summer dress! (week 6)
In maths over the last two weeks the Year 1 children have been learning how to recognise and find half and a quarter of a object, shape or amount. We have also explored finding the whole when we are given the half or quarter, we found this a bit trickier ! (Wk 5)
We have been very excited watching our caterpillars grow and become chrysalides. Today we carefully moved our chrysalides to the butterfly habitat in preparation for the next stage! Just in case our butterflies emerge over the weekend we have placed our flower feeder, saturated with nectar, into the net. We are crossing our fingers that they don't emerge until we are back in school so that we can watch everything. (Wk 4)
We had a great time celebrating the coronation this afternoon. All the children came dressed in red, white and blue, some were dressed as kings and others as princesses. Although rain forced us into the hall it did not dampen our spirits. Take a look at some of the photos of the children enjoying their quiche, cake and hunt the crown game! (Wk 3)
In Outdoor Learning this week we went on a nature walk with Woodpeckers class. The children walked up Station Lane and saw where the train platform once stood. Everyone remembered this from last terms topic. We continued climbing up out of the village, this was a steep climb but we all managed to get to the top! On the way we saw Spring lambs, different varieties of wild flowers and tree blossom. Walking across the ridge at the top of the village we had a magnificent ariel view of Longhope. We identified many of the familiar buildings we had walked around during our village walk last term. We had a great afternoon and we very lucky with the weather. The children are excited to repeat the walk towards the end of our Summer term to see if we can see any changes in the hedgerows. (Wk 2)
We have been reading 'The Hungry Caterpillar', by Eric Carle this week. In our outdoor learning lesson the children created their own representations of the caterpillar from the story using natural materials they found in our nature area. The children came up with some interesting ideas using leaves, petals, wood, small stones and nut shells. Some of the children retold the story and even used a hole punch in the 'foods' the caterpillar ate. Have a look at our photos below, they don't do justice to the marvellous detail the children added but will give you a flavour for what they did. (Wk 1)
